Shri.ChandanBiswas, an engineering graduate after coming into contact with Animal Science Division, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair in 2018 started the Scientific rearing of the goats with 27 female and 2 male in raised goat shed made of locally available bamboo and low cost materials at Mithakhari, South Andaman . He adopted azolla as feed, mineral mixture supplementation, regular deworming, scientific breeding, management of urine and dung by converting into compost, fodder cultivation, etc. The stock has been increased to 73 in a period of two year.
Beside, he is also rearing Vanraja ( 250 nos)and undertaking home delivery of eggs, meat to the Port Blair city. Based on the technical advice of the scientific team, he has successfully converted the agro-bio waste generated from his farm into organic manure. He sells manure @ Rs 20 per kg on demand basis. During the last one and half year he has sold 15 goats for meat purpose with an average body weight of 22-25 kg for Rs 500 to 600 per kg live body weight. He has also sold one breeding buck (32 kg body weight) for Rs 900 per kg live body weight.
Scientists of the ICAR-CIARI provided all the technical guidance viz. scientific management practices, selection of male and female, breeding management, feeding mineral supplementation and vitamins, management of goat faecal pellets as manure, providing health calendar, recording of the body weight, growth paramters etc. He has also planted fodder trees, viz.moringa, glyricidia, jackfruit and subabul in the fence of his farm and growing hypbridnapier and maize fodder.
With the technical support of the ICAR-CIARI the flock size has been increased to 73 from 29 in two years.Adult body weight was found to be ranging from 20-25 kg.
He sellsbreeding buck @ Rs900 to 1000 per kg, and for meat purpose @ Rs500-600 per kg. So far he has sold 15 bucks and earned around Rs 1,60,000/-.In addition his income has enhanced by selling goat manure @ Rs 20 per kg .
He has planned to upscale the flock size to 100 numbers.
