A week-long awareness program on sea turtle nesting and their habitat conservation through citizen science held from 29 November to 06 December 2023 concluded at Car Nicobar Island. The program was organized by ICAR- Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Car Nicobar, and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) New Delhi. A total of 105 Nicobarese fishersfrom different villages such as Kimios, Kakana, Arong, Teetop, Sawai, Perka, Big Lapathy, and Malacca actively took part in the on-site event. The ecological importance of sea turtle nesting sites and their significance in the sustainable management of coastal ecosystems was sensitized. The participants identified the key informants on sea turtle nesting sites from different villages who shall pass the reliable information upon sighting sea turtle nests and habitats. The tribal fishers took part with great enthusiasm and expressed their willingness towards co-management of the marine faunal resources. Dr. R Kiruba Sankar, Senior Scientist, Dr. Santosh Kumar, Head, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Car Nicobar, Shri Mohamed Sarief, and Miss Luncida Meshack coordinated the awareness program under the guidance of Dr.Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI.
