Raje Jayachandran is a house wife. Her husband was a driver in Pioneer Steel Industries, Bathu Basthi. During COVID time, he lost his job and thus the family income suffered. They decided to deviate their attention to agriculture and came to know about the quail training organized in the ICAR-CIARI. They attended the training and were technically supported by CIARI with supply of 1 unit of Quail chicks.. With the confidence they got they started quail entrepreneurship by routinely purchasing day old quail chicks from Animal Husbandry, Dollygunj and reared. They started sale of quails and eggs and started getting good market and profit.
Training on quail farming and marketing for entrepreneurship was imparted by ICAR-CIARI. Initially Quail chicks were supplied under NABARD Quail project. Visit of Scientist to the farmer site and guidance was on time about the cage construction, brooder management etc. Constant interaction with the farmer through phone and WhatsApp for guidance was maintained.
The family find quail farming as a good side-business without disturbing their daily works. CIARI promoted and trained on cage system of rearing which they followed and helped for the routine management of the quail even by the kids of the family. They sale the eggs (non-fertile) and quails to the stakeholders which include hotels, persons contacting though WhatsApp groups. The training on the quail brooder management helped them to rear the quail with less than <5% mortality which have a great role in their success. The day-old quail chicks supplied freely under NABARD project helped them to gain a confidence in the quail farming and take it to a new levels of self-reliance.
A monthly income ranging from Rs. 4000-8000 has been generated by sale of eggs and quails. A stock of 100-200 quails is kept.
Finding larger market through display of banners in the town areas and also keeping quail eggs in the Hypermarkets could increase the sale and profit. Also, incubator facility may be created so that dependency to the other agency for day old chicks can be avoided.
