SITUATION ANALYSIS

Shri. Vikas Lall, aged 28 years, an enterprising youth from Coffee Bagicha, South Andaman gotassociated with ICAR-CIARI in 2019 and started commercial goat farming. He constructed goat shed in an area of approximately 1000 sq meter with concrete flooring and raised platform by using slatted flooring material. He invested approximately Rs 7.50 lakhs including the cost of shed and goats. He started the goat farming with 16 does and one male (which was provided by ICAR-CIARI for upgradation of the germplasm). Before starting the goat farming he was not having proper scientific knowledge about the goat farming. Therefore he aproached the ICAR-CIARI and underwent training on goat farming.


TECHNOLOGY INTERVENTIONS

Scientists of the ICAR-CIARI provided all the technical guidance viz. scientific management practices, selection of male and female, breeding management through multiplier flock concept with elite buck, feeding mineral supplementation and vitamins, management of goat faecal pellets as manure, providing health calendar, recording of the body weight, growth paramters etc.


IMPACT / OUTCOME OF TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION

With the technical support of the ICAR-CIARI the flock size has been increased to 69 in two years.

INCOME GENERATION

He is selling breeding buck @ Rs 800 per kg and for meat purpose @ Rs 450 per kg. Cost of black coloured buck is more due to high demand during festival. So far he has sold 18 bucks and earned net income of Rs 78545/-. The doe productivity is Rs. 5236 per doe whereas doe productivity of other doe is Rs.2907 per doe. He is also selling goat faecal pellets @ Rs 10 per kg and so far he has sold breeding bucks to 15 farmers which has increased the superior buck germplasm in the field.


WAY FORWARD

He is very happy with the performance of his farm and technical guidance from the ICAR-CIARI and willing to increase
