SITUATION ANALYSIS

Smti Monica Talukdar, aged 45 years, a progressive women goat farmer from Jaipur Village, Nimbudera, North & Middle Andaman has been rearing goat since last 13 years. Her husband isfarmer and doing agriculture activities viz.paddy follwed by vegetable cultivation. They are earning approximatley Rs 1.2 lakhs from the agriculture activities. From goatery they are earning approxamtley Rs. 25000 to 30000. Presently, she is having a total of 22 goats which are being maintained in raised type low cost wooden/bamboo shelter. She was adopted under the Goat Imrpvoment project since January 2019. Since then she is showing very much interest in scientific goat rearing and is in regular contact with ICAR-CIARI for technical advice for improving the productivity of her goats.The following problems were narrated by Smti Monica Talukdar :

  • Lack of information and knowledge on scientific goat farming
  • No scientific idea about management practices, breeding, deworming practices, feeding of mineral mixtures.
  • Non-availability of medicines
  • Lack of proper housing knowledge
  • No market linkage
  • Poor growth
  • High mortality due to disease
  • Lack of good quality breeding buck

  • TECHNOLOGY INTERVENTIONS

    Technical guidance viz.timely deworming, health management, supplementation of mineral mixture, scientific breeding, selection of superior germplasmetc were advised and demonstrated. Staff of ICAR-CIARI during the visit at regular interval o provide the inputs and suggestion.From the project, an elite buck was also provided for genetic upgradation of her goats and nearby villages. The stock has been increased to 22 from 12 nos. She has sold 6 goats and 4 goats were given to her relatives. She has adopted the technology of regular and timely deworming, feeding mineral mixtures, regular cleaning of the shelter, selection of the bucks and does based on the performance recording. All the goats have been tagged and proper records is being maintained.


    IMPACT / OUTCOME OF TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION

    After adopting the scientific practices on breeding with superior buck, timely deworming, supplementation of mineral mixture to alleviate mineral deficiency during pregnancy and lactation, now she has increased the flock to 22. The mortality was reduced from 30 % to less than 5 %. Body weight of the 3 months old goats increased from 5.82 to 7.27 kg. During last year she has sold 6 goats and distributed 4 goats to her relatives.


    INCOME GENERATION

    She is earning net income ranging from Rs. 30000 to 50000 per year through sale of adult goats at the age of 11 to 12 months.


    WAY FORWARD

    She is interested to increase the flock size to 40 to 50 to get more income from goat farming in scientific way.
