She started backyard poultry in 2015. She had no knowledge on vaccination, housing and feeding of birds. She used to suffer huge economic loss due to high mortality of 40-50 percent. She lost interest and quit poultry farming. Her family was in financial crisis and even she could not able to spend money for their children education.Her husband is a daily wages labour.
She heard about the fellowship programme of DBT Biotech kisan hub in 2019 and on selection she joined training at CIARI for one month under DBT Biotech kisan hub and acquired skill on vaccination, medication, feeding and overall scientific management of rural poultry.
Since then, she started practicing as per scientist’s instructions and constructed raised housing for poultry. As per the advice she started vaccinating birds for Ranikhet disease (RD) and Infectious bursal disease (IBD). With the intervention of vaccination as well as treating of sick birds with herbal medication, the mortality was reduced to 8 %. Under the DBT-Biotech Kisan hub, a mini incubator of 240 egg capacity was established as demonstration unit. With the demonstration of mini incubator unit ,she could able to hatch out chicks and is supplying day old chicks to the other farmers @ Rs. 70 per chick. She is providing hatching facility to the needy @ Rs. 20 per egg. She has started hatching of quail eggs and ventured into quail farming as well. She has extended her poultry farming by constructing one more poultry shed. The flock size is maintained @ 100 to 150 at all time. She has started retail marketing by herself and selling poultry and quails @ Rs500 – 550 per kg.
By adopting this technology the monthly income of her family has been increased from Rs.6000/- to Rs. 20000/.She expressed that with the increase in profit, now she could able to send their wards to tuition and coaching classes and also possible for timely repayment of loan and savings of amount. She has purchased one auto for her husband.
The entrepreneurship through mini incubator has become sustainable livelihood resource for her family and she is planning to purchase one more incubator.
