Smti. Rani Anbumalar is a widow with two children residing in a remote village of Shoalbay, South Andaman. She has been involved in agricultural activities at very small level and was rearing backyard poultry of 5-10 nos. Due to lack of scientific knowledge on poultry farming, she lost maximum birds and hardly received eggs for home consumption. She found difficulty with temporary salary of Rs. 3000 per month as health field worker even for day to day livelihood of her family. She has been in network of ICAR-CIARI since many years . Few years back she approached Animal Science Division for guidance in goat and rural poultry farming.
She joined one month farmers’ fellowship programme under DBT – Biotech Kisan Hub and attended many demonstrations and trainings under NABARD projects on multiplier concept and poultry health. She gained knowledge on scientific farming practices in goat rearing and on regular vaccination, deworming, homemade herbal tonics and balanced feeding for rural poultry. She was given hands on training on operation of mini incubator. Subsequently, one mini incubator was also established in her field as demonstration unit under DBT-Biotech Kisan Hub for supply of rural poultry chicks to her village.
After scientific interventions, she constructed a shed to establish the mini incubator and she has achieved 80-90 % survivability in rural poultry. Using mini incubator, she has increased her rural poultry farm size to 50 birds per month. She has converted the mini incubator unit to incubation center by providing hatching facility to other farmers @ Rs. 20 per egg. She is collecting hatchable eggs from other farmers, hatching them out and selling them @ Rs.100per chick after two to three weeks after completing two vaccines. In addition she is selling eggs @ 50 eggs per week @ Rs. 20 per egg. She is male birds @ Rs. 500 per kg. Upon interventions of breeding with elite buck in goat farming, she is regularly practicing all activities such as deworming, dipping, supplemental feeding and breeding with elite bucks and initiated crossing with elite bucks in her community.
She is getting net income of Rs 7000 to 8000 per month through this business. With the net profit she started goat farming with construction of low cost goat shelter and her goat flock increased from 2 to 10 goats with one superior buck.
She is a role model and aspires to become an entrepreneur in her village
