A 3 days training programme on Freshwater Ornamental Fish Breeding got underway today with its inauguration by Shri G. Sudhakar, IAS, Secretary (Fisheries) at Fisheries Training Centre, Marine Hill.
In his inaugural address, the Secretary (Fisheries) encouraged the participants to take up freshwater ornamental fish breeding as a commercial activity by forming SHGs and societies to reap the benefit extended by the Department through PMMSY. He also expressed happiness in the interest shown by women participants in the training programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. E B Chakurkar, Director, ICAR - CIARI, Garacharma highlighted about the current status of ornamental fish trade in India which is mainly dominated by West Bengal. He called up on Training programme on Freshwater Ornamental Fish Breeding gets underway Secretary (Fisheries) encourages participants to take up freshwater ornamental fish breeding as commercial activity by forming SHGs the need for commencement of ornamental fish breeding on commercial scale in the Islands to minimize the import of ornamental fish from mainland for the benefit of the Islanders in terms of income generation and to avoid infusion of any disease and introduction of invasive species.
In his address, Shri Vikram Singh, Director of Fisheries motivated the participants and requested them to make use of the training for skill development and to adopt freshwater ornamental fish breeding in a professional way for better earnings. He assured all possible assistance from the Department for taking up the activity as self employment opportunity.
Dr. S. K. Zamir Ahmed, Head (i/c) Fisheries Science Division, ICAR-CIARI, Garacharma detailed the training schedule and requested to create a Whatsapp Group for effective follow-up of the training programme and for further handholding of the participants in commencing Ornamental Fish trade in the Islands. Shri S.U Maheswar Rao, Governing Body Member, NFDB, Hyderabad also addressed the gathering.
A training manual with illustration of the activities under Ornamental Fisheries Development was released by the Secretary for distribution to the participants. The programme is jointly organized by Department of Fisheries, A&N Administration and ICAR-CIARI, Garacharma involving 25 women participants of A&N Islands and with financial assistance from National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Hyderabad under skill development programme of PMMSY.
Earlier, Dr. K. Gopal, Joint Director welcomed the gathering and the inaugural session ended with the vote of thanks by Shri Abdul Salam, Assistant Director of Fisheries (Ext &Trg). The training programme will cover theoretical and practical aspects on breeding, seed production & rearing different freshwater ornamental fishes, rearing of ornamental plants, art of aquascaping, fabrication of aquarium tanks, ornamental fish nutrition and disease management, a press release from Directorate of Fisheries said.
