Training on Scientific tuber crops cultivation to Nicobari farmers at Nancowrie Islands


ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Garacharma conducted a training programe on “Scientific tuber crops cultivation for higher productivity” at Chota Enaka, Kakana, Pilpillowand Vikas Nagar villages of Nancowriefrom 17thto 22nd July 2024.During the programme, Dr. I. Jaisankar, Senior Scientist (Ago forestry) explained about the use of multipurpose tree species for efficient resource utilization, conservation of endemic tuber diversity to mitigate the impact of climate change, scientific tuber crops cultivation, tuber crops based farming system, organic waste management and integrated pest and disease management in tuber crops. Shri C Vinod Kumar. Asst. Director (Soil), Shri. M.K.Arsad,Shri. Mahammed Haneefa, Agriculture Department, Kamortaexplained about the package of practices of potential tuber cropsfor a Tuhet garden. In total, 153 farmers from 4 villages participated in this series of awareness cum training programme. Coconut climbing device, CIARI Dweep Micro, sweet potato sprouted cuttings, tapioca setts and spade were distributed to the farmers.The whole programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. E.B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR_CIARI.
