ICAR- KVK, Nimbudera, N&M Andaman Organized training on “Promotion of spices cultivation in plantation based cropping system”


A training on “Promotion of spices cultivation in plantation based cropping system” was organised by ICAR- KVK, Nimbudera, North & Middle Andaman from 18 to 20 July, 2024 at Sivapuram Gram Panchayat, Rangat, Middle Andaman in order to promote cultivation of spices. The program was inaugurated by Smt. Adi Laxmi, Up-Pradhan, Sivapuram gram panchayat in the presence of Mrs. Sherly Thomas, Joint Director, Department of Agriculture, N&M Andaman. At the outset, Mr. Yatharth Sharma, SMS, KVK welcomed the gathering and briefed about the training program. Mrs. Sherly Thomas, highlighted the scope and importance of spices cultivation in N&M Andaman district. She emphasized the superior quality of spices abundantly produced throughout the region and urged the farmers to integrate spices for additional income. Smti. Adi Laxmi, Up-Pradhan, Sivapuram gram panchayat expressed her happiness and lauded the efforts of KVK and ICAR- CIARI for organizing such training program for the benefit of farming communities and motivated the farmers and farm women to adopt spice cultivation in their existing plantation to get maximum returns. Dr. V. Damodaran, Sr. Scientist & Head, ICAR- KVK, Nimbudera, urged the farmers and stakeholders for the adoption of improved varieties of different spices and also stressed upon the potential of cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper and clove as suitable intercrop in the coconut plantation to fetch higher production and profitability of the system as a whole. Later in the technical session various aspects of cultivation were dealt in detail by the resource persons of KVK. Mr. Subam Debroy, SMS (Aquaculture) emphasized the importance of spices in pond based system for additional income and self-employment opportunities. Mr. Rakesh Dawar, SMS (Agronomy), provided detailed insights into the recycling of organic waste in plantation-based cropping systems. Mr. Yatharth Sharma, SMS (Home Science) enlightened farmers on the critical role of post-harvest management in minimizing losses and improving spice quality and productivity. The programme was organized under the overall guidance of Dr. Eaknath. B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR- CIARI, Port Blair. About 27 farmers and farm women participated and benefited from the training.
