Swachhta Hi Seva Compaign 2024 at ICAR-CIARI

Day -1, Swachhata Pledge and Selfie Points at ICAR-CIARI Campus


On 15th September 2024, ICAR-CIARI actively participated in the National Swachhata Campaign by organizing a Swachhata Pledge ceremony on campus. All the staff of ICAR-CIARI, Port took the pledge, committing to cleanliness.


To engage and inspire participation, selfie points were installed at different locations across the campus, allowing individuals to capture their support for the campaign. Additionally, banners promoting the Swachh Bharat mission were displayed in prominent areas, spreading awareness and reinforcing the importance of cleanliness.

Day-2, ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ Plantation Drive at Garacharma Campus by ICAR-CIARI


On 16th September 2024 , ICAR-CIARI organized a plantation drive at Garacharma campus under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative. 50 nos. of Sapota (Chiku) saplings were planted with the active participation of 60 staff members. The event emphasized key messages of Swabhav (behaviour), Sanskar (values), Zimmedari (responsibility), and Bhaagidari (participation), fostering environmental responsibility and community involvement. This initiative aimed at both environmental sustainability and beautification of the local area.

Day-3, Engagement of School Children conducted by ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute


An essay competition was conducted for school children at Government Senior Secondary School, Bathubasti, Port Blair, as part of the Swachhta Pakhwada initiative on 18-09-2024. The event featured two categories: one for upper primary students and the other for senior students, with the topics.

A total of 20 students participated enthusiastically in the competition. The prize distribution ceremony took place during the morning assembly, where the winners were recognized for their thoughtful and well-articulated essays. Dr. Prabhu P, a scientist from ICAR-CIARI, was delivered an awareness address. In his speech, Dr. Prabhu highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness and the role of youth in promoting sustainable practices for a cleaner environment. Mr. Dasan Pushparaj, the Principal of the school, presided over the function and commended the students for their active participation. He encouraged them to continue contributing to society through such initiatives. The event successfully raised awareness about cleanliness among the students and instilled a sense of responsibility towards maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment.

Day-4, Swachhata Runs


A Swachhata Run was successfully conducted at the ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair campus on 19th September 2024, as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission. Dr. Abhilash welcomed the Director of CIARI, along with scientific, administrative, technical, skilled, and contractual staff who participated in the event. The run commenced at 10:00 AM from Zero Point, with staff taking a lap around the campus. Participants also took a pledge to maintain cleanliness in their campus, offices, and residences, while committing to minimize the use of single-use plastics.

Day – 5, Wall Painting Initiative as Part of Swachh Bharat Mission at ICAR-CIARI on 19th September 2024


As part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, a wall painting initiative was conducted on 19.09.2024 at ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair. The painting was done along the main road, a prominent area visible to all visitors entering and exiting the institute campus.


The artwork features impactful slogans, including “Swachh Bharat” symbolized by Mahatma Gandhi’s iconic glasses, “Clean India, Green India,” and “Swachhata Hi Sewa.” These messages serve to inspire the institute's staff to maintain cleanliness across the campus, offices, and residential areas, while also advocating for the reduction of single-use plastics. This initiative demonstrates the institute's commitment to fostering a clean and green environment in alignment with the national Swachh Bharat mission.

Day-6, Swacchta Samvad


ICAR- CIARI, Port Blair conducted Swacchta Samvad on 20.09.2024 at Creekabad, Chouldari, South Andaman under Swacchta Abhiyaan (15.09.2024 to 02.10.2024).


At the outset, Shri. K. Shyam Sundar Rao, Coordinator welcomed the gathering comprising of Dr. Y. Ramakrishna Pr. Scientist, SMS’s, Smti. Teena STO and the villagers of Chouldari and spoke about the recycling of e-waste and application of segregation of waste generated at their homes; to keep the environment safe and sustainable. While speaking on this occasion, Dr. Y. Ramakrishna emphasized on the utilization of naturally available resources and recycling of waste generated at home and garden. During the lecture delivered by the Smti. Teena STO stressed and appealed to all the farmers to avoid plastic as much as possible and spoke the ill effects of plastic to keep the human health and environment safe. A total of 20 farmers attended the programme and discussed various issues to keep the environment safe, clean and sustainable.

Day-7, Awareness Campaign on Zero Waste


ICAR- CIARI, Port Blair conducted “Awareness Campaign on Zero Waste”on 21.09.2024 at Creekabad, Chouldari, South Andaman under Swacchta Abhiyaan (15.09.2024 to 02.10.2024).


Smti. Teena, STO & Coordinator welcomed the gathering the villagers of Chouldari and spoke about the recycling of e-waste and application of segregation of waste generated at their homes; to keep the environment safe and sustainable. While speaking Shri. Shyam Sundar Rao appealed to all the farmers to avoid plastic as much as possible and recycle the waste generated by humans to keep the human health and environment safe. A total of 20 farmers attended the programme and discussed various issues to keep the environment safe, clean and sustainable.

Day-7, Awareness cum Cleanliness programme under Swacchta Abhiyan at Tourist spots, religious & spiritual places


ICAR- CIARI, Port Blair conducted “Awareness cum Cleanliness programme at Ayannar Temple and Joggers Park, Port Blair on 23.09.2024 under Swacchta Abhiyaan Fortnight. The ICAR-CIARI officials and temple staff members were actively participated in the cleaning and removing the plastic and garbage surrounding the temple.


One more awareness cum cleanliness programme was conducted at Joggers Park on the same day. A total of 20 housekeeping and sanitation staff actively involved in cleaning the park. Whereas Smti. Teena and Shri. K. Shyam Sundar Rao coordinators spoke about on "disadvantages of plastic and impose the restriction to discard the dirt and waste around the temple" and ensure them to keep the park clean and hygienic by motivating the tourist and local public to segregate the waste generated by them and discard in the respective dustbins.

Day-8, ICAR-CIARI Employees Form Human Chain for Swachhta Abhiyan at Zero Point, Port Blair


The employees of ICAR-CIARI stood and formed "Human Chain" for Swacchta Abhiyan at Zero Point, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair on 25.09.2024 under Swacchta Abhiyaan Fortnight to spread the message for keeping our institute and Institute premises meticulously clean and hygienic.

Day-10, Health Camp for Eye Check-up Organized at ICAR-CIARI in Collaboration with Agarwal Hospital


On 26.09.2024, as part of Swachhta Pakhwada, a health camp was organized at ICAR-CIARI in collaboration with Agarwal Hospital. The camp provided eye check-ups for sanitation staff and other CIARI employees aged 55 and above. This initiative aimed to promote the well-being of staff members by addressing their healthcare needs, particularly eye health, which is essential for their day-to-day work. The event was well-received and reflected ICAR-CIARI's commitment to the health and safety of its employees.

Day-11 - Selfie Points installed at village locations


On 27.09.2024, As part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, selfie points was set up at several locations in Chouldari Village, South Andaman district, by ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair. During the event, Dr. Abhilash urged villagers to uphold cleanliness in their homes, maintain hygiene around cattle and poultry sheds, and ensure that their farms are kept weed-free, tools and implements be sterilised before using. He also highlighted the need to minimize the use of single-use plastics for a healthier and cleaner environment.

Day 12- Distribution of PPE Kits & safety gears


On 28.06.2024, As part of Swachhta Pakhwada, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) kits were distributed to all housekeeping staff. The kits included gum boots, hand gloves, masks, and sanitizers to ensure their safety while maintaining cleanliness. And a health was organised in ciari with collaboration of Agarwal hospital for eye check up for sanitation staff and other staff of CIARI above 55 Year age

Day-13, Mega Cleanliness Drive

Day-14, Swachh Bharat Diwas


Swachh Bharat Diwas was celebrated at ICAR-CIARI on October 2, 2024, coinciding with the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. The event began with the Dr. E.B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI offering floral tributes to both leaders, honouring their contributions to the nation. Shri. Kanishak Bhukar, Administrative Officer presented a PowerPoint showcasing awareness programs conducted from September 15 to October 2, 2024, focusing on cleanliness and sanitation education for staff and students.


In his address, the Dr. E.B. Chakurkar Director ICAR-CIARI emphasized the importance of ongoing efforts to maintain cleanliness, urging everyone to commit to keeping their surroundings clean year-round. He stressed that cleanliness is a shared responsibility that requires collective action. The event concluded with a call to action, encouraging ICAR-CIARI members to actively participate in cleanliness drives and uphold Swachh Bharat principles throughout the year. This celebration underscored the significance of cleanliness for a healthier community and society.
