Regional Station Minicoy of ICAR-CIARI Port Blair conducted a “Sensitization programme on livelihood augmentation through diversification of fishing technologies & Input Distribution under STC for the welfare of fishermen of Minicoy from 29 to 31 July 2024. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Gladston Y. and Dr. Ajina S. M., Scientist of ICAR-CIARI, Regional Station, Minicoy interacted with the fishermen and sensitized the status of marine capture fisheries of Lakshadweep Islands. Shri. Shareefuddeen Hassan, Senior Technical Assistant,and Shri. Arif M.I., Senior Technician, coordinators of the programme briefed about the importance of the fishing inputs towards sustainable fisheries and employment opportunities in ‘Mahl’ (the local language). A total of 23people participated in the input distribution program. The scientific team visited Funhilol, Aoumagu, Boduathiri, Bada, New Boduathiri, Sedivalu, Aloodi, Funhilol, Kudehi, Fallessery and Kendiparty villages and South Pandaramto sensitize the local fishermen towardslivelihood augmentation through diversification of fishing technologies. Besides fishing kits (Kollamas, nylon mono-line, lead, Popper, lure) were distributed to the 14 selectedartisanal fishermen of Minicoy. Dr. Gladston Y &Dr. Ajina S.M, Convener and the Co-convener, Shri Shareefuddeen Hassan and Shri Arif M.I., Dr. Kiruba Sankar, Nodal Officer, Lakshadweep coordinated the overall conduct of programme under the Chairmanship of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair.
