Field Day on “Gladiolus-a high end flower under coconut plantation for livelihood security of tribal communities in Lakshadweep Islands” Conducted by RS Minicoy of ICAR- CIARI

Regional Station, Minicoy of ICAR-CIARI Port Blair, conducted a “Field Day on “Gladiolus-a high end flower under coconut plantation for livelihood security of tribal communities in Lakshadweep Islands” on 18th August2022.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest Mr. Hussain Manikfan, Chairperson Village Dweep Panchayat, Minicoy expressed his happiness on thenew initiatives, ie.flower cultivation, and entrepreneurship development through floriculture for the tribal farmers by ICAR-CIARI, Regional Station.

The scientific team comprising of Dr. Ajina S. Mand Dr. Gladston Y interacted with the farmers and impressed upon the package of practices for gladiolus farming under coconut plantation as intercrop.Shri. Shareefuddeen Hassan, Senior Technical Assistant and Shri. Arif M.I., Senior Technician the Coordinator of the programme informed about the technical know-how and do how to the participants in ‘Mahl’ (the local language).Also took practical session on bouquet making and post-harvest management of cut flower. Thereafter the participatingfarm women were exposed to institute on-going activities.

A total of 31 participants from Bouduathiri and South Bandaramvillages attended the field day in which they were exposed to gladiolus cultivation under coconut plantation at the institute station.

Dr. Ajina S.M, Convener and Co-Conveners Dr. Gladston Y Coordinator, Shri Shareefuddeen Hassan& Shri Arif M.I.,Dr.S.K. Zamir Ahmed, Nodal Officer, Lakshadweep coordinated the overall conduct of programme under the Chairmanship of Dr. Eaknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair.
