The Betta fish are air breathers which directly inhale atmospheric oxygen and thrive in deoxygenated stagnant water bodies. There are more than 100 strains of Betta fishes available in the aquarium trade. This species can be easily bred and cultured at home or at commercial scale employing glass tanks, tubs, or cement tanks (2 x 2 meter). The price ranges from 20 to 5000 INR. The Betta fish attains a marketable size within 2 months in these small bottles, and can be fed on a variety of artificial feed. The breeding and seed production for Betta fish is standardized, and can be easily adopted by unemployed youths, women self-help groups, school dropouts and fish farmers.
