Dweep CARI Brinjal 1

About Institute
Dweep CARI Brinjal 1

Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) is the important vegetable crop of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and cultivated round the year. Bacterial wilt of brinjal caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is a severe disease, which cause yield loss from 20 to 50 per cent. This disease has risen to alarming proportion in Bay islands and rest of the country. Most of the commercial varieties or hybrids grown are highly susceptible to this disease. ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Port Blair has developed a bacterial wilt resistant brinjal variety Dweep CARI Brinjal 1 which gives 25-30 t/ha fruit yield. Plants are medium tall with profuse branching. Fruits are light green in colour and oblong in shape with less seeds and is resistant to Bacterial wilt disease. This variety also exhibited moderate drought tolerance ability during water stress situations, thus it is recommended for growing during dry season (October to May) in islands conditions.

Benefit:More yield per unit area (25-30 t/ha). Fruits are big, glossy with less seeds.
