Andaman Local Goat (ALG) is medium to short stature with colour combination of black, brown and white mainly distributed in the Andaman group of islands. These goats were imported from Bengal and adjacent area in different phases of habitation and rehabilitation by the Britishers. Over the years, they have adapted in the tropical humid climate of Island and are now popularly known as Andaman Local Goat. They are usually reared by the islanders under extensive/semi intensive system. There is no specialized traits or characteristics of this goat, however, in general mostly they are black in colour and admixture of brown with white are also found preferred for its excellent chevon quality .Black colour is mostly preferred by the people for religious functions. The colour of the muzzle is grey to light black. Ears are flat and leaf-like, medium-sized and drooping. Both sexes have small horns, curved upward and backward. Tail is medium in length and curved upward. The body weight at 12 months of age varies from 14-19 kg. It is a meat type goat, however milk yield per day varies from 380 to 750 ml. Lactation length is short and usually ranges from 45-90 days. Average kidding rate is 1.54 and the twinning percentage is more than 60 %. These goats are mainly distributed in the Andaman group of islands and out of the total population almost 80% is available in the North, Middle and South Andaman districts.

Benefit:This breed is highly suitable and adaptable to the islands climatic conditions.
