Andamani Duck

Andaman local ducks are medium sized ducks with features of comparatively longer neck, yellowish bill with black tip, black skin, white band around neck and shorter shank as compared to other indigenous ducks. Genetic analysis indicated evolvement of this duck germplasm within the microenvironment of Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. This could be justified on the basis of positive value of Neutrality test results which indicates neutral evolvement of the AD population in this island. Drakes have dark greenish head, with white band on neck and breast and belly of light grey. Ducks have white breast and belly with feathers of black and brown in colour. Bill has unique feature of black tip. Short and narrow bills, short body and shank, long neck with short and broader head. The adult body weight at six months is 1180 gms. Andaman ducks have comparatively higher egg production 265 nos with other indigenous ducks in laying cycle of 18 months.
