Animal Science Division of ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Garacharma, South Andaman conducted three days training on “Fodder production to improve livestock productivity in South Andaman” from 21-23 April, 2022 at Church premises of Ranchi Basti, Wandoor.The programme was conducted under the NABARD funded project “Establishment of sustainable model village on fodder production at South Andaman”.
On the first day, at outset Mr. Abbubaker, (Senior Technician) welcomed the gathering Mrs. Meenakshi, progressive farmer from Wandoor was the liaison person for the programme. Dr. P.A. Bala, Senior Scientist and Course Director enlightened the participants about the dairy animals feeding and general recommendations, where he emphasized on feeding balanced ration to get maximum productivity from the animals. Further, Dr. P.Perumal, Scientist & Course Director addressed the participants on strategies to improve milk yield in cattle, where he stressed the role of nutrition in production and reproduction. A survey was done in the village for collecting the basic data and probing the avenues for scientific interventions. Hands on training and demonstration of fodder cultivation was also conducted in the farmers’ field. The participants showed keen interest to imbibe the awareness imparted to them and were very much enthusiastic to inculcate the ideas in their field to increase their animal’s productivity. In the feedback, the participants felt the knowledge was very useful to them and requested to conduct such type of programme in near future. The whole programme was conducted under the Chairmanship of Dr. D. Bhattacharya (HoD, Animal Science Division)and overall supervision of Dr. E.B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-CIARI.
