The first KrishiVigyan Kendra (KVK) of A&N Group of Islands under Zone – II, Kolkata was established in 1993 under the administrative control of Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI), Port Blair. It is one of the innovative institutions with the mandate of imparting vocational training to the practicing farmers including, farm women, youth and extension functionaries in improved technologies in the field of agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries and other allied enterprises. It has additional responsibilities of testing and refining the developed technologies and also to conduct front line demonstrations of new technologies in the farmer’s field. The KVK of CARI is situated adjacent to Andaman Trunk Road (ATR) at Sippighat, which is about 7 Kms away from the Host Institute (CARI) and 16Kms from the Port Blair city.
KrishiVigyan Kendra (KVK), North and Middle Andaman was established in 2012 .It comes under ATARI Zone – II, Kolkata under the administrative control of Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Port Blair.The prime goal of KVK Nimbudera is to accelerate agricultural and allied production in the north and middle Andaman besides imparting training as per needs and requirements of the farmers, farm women and rural youths including school drop-outs for entrepreneurship development and women empowerment . “Teaching by doing” and “learning by doing” through work experience is the principle methods of imparting skill & training programmes. The mandate of the institution is imparting vocational training to the practicing farmers including, farm women, youth and extension functionaries in improved technologies in the field of agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries ,home science and other allied enterprises. It has additional responsibilities of testing and refining the developed technologies and also to conduct front line demonstrations of new technologies in the farmer’s field.
KVK Nicobar was sanctioned on 20th May, 2010 for Nicobar District by ICAR, New Delhi. The location of KrishiVigyan Kendra is in Nicobar District which is tribal area having majority of the area under coconut plantation and agri-horticulture based cropping system practiced in traditional way. The KVK aims to transfer agriculture and allied technologies through training, conducting front line demonstration and on farm trials for its adoption by the stakeholders. During the period the following activities were performed.
To address the researchable issues pertaining to the Island ecosystem in a more systematic and intensify manner, the regional station of ICAR-CPCRI at Minicoy Islands came under the jurisdiction of ICAR-CIARI w.e.f. 1st April 2017.
