Andaman & Nicobar group of Islands possessing unique biodiversity and comparatively unexplored flora and fauna have gained importance not only at National level but also in International scenario. The AgriHort-Fish and Animal based farming system has enormous potential for providing livelihood options and can play a pivotal role in supporting tourism based economy. The institute has contributed very significantly to the growth of island agriculture i.e. from a share of about 20-30% of the local requirement to more than 50% for most of the perishable commodities.


During the period the institute has taken effort in showcasing its achievement through various activities such as Island Kisan Mela with theme of Horticulture: A Promising Enterprises for A&N Islands, Farm Innovators Meet, National Seminar on Technological Options for Enhancing Productivity of Spices and Plantation Crops and Biennial Group Meeting of All India Coordinated Research Project on Integrated Farming Systems focusing on Horticulture as a major component. Beside International Conference on Recent Perspectives in Macromolecular Structure and Function to address the basic research issues was also organised. Stakeholders meet, one of the most important event involving representative stakeholders from all spheres i.e. progressive farmers, officials of development departments, policy makers, scientists, Krishi Vigyan Kendra and NABARD was conducted under the Chairmanship of Honourable Dr. H.P. Singh, DDG (Horticulture), ICAR, New Delhi. Further we are in the process of conducting a workshop on maize, interface dialogue with department of Fisheries, Animal husbandry, Agriculture and the PRI'S for taking the feedback in strengthening the research and development activities for the prosperity of the Island farmers.
